Steve Silverman has practiced law and been a business executive for 5 decades.
He is the founding partner of Silverman & Milligan LLP a boutique Law Firm in West Los Angeles. His law practice currently includes the representation of businesses in several different industries – but most of them have in common that they are subject to regulatory control and requirements.
Included among the regulatory bodies for which he provides guidance to businesses are: The Securities and Exchange Commission, the Corporation Commissions of several of the States, the California Medical Board, The Division of Industrial Relations, The Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, the Insurance Departments of several of the states and the Nevada Health Department, the FDA, the FCC and the Federal Aviation Admiinistration. In the past he has also handled matters before the Federal Banking Regulators and the Federal Communications Commission.
Silverman started his career at one of the prominent firms in Los Angeles specializing in Business Bankruptcies; he later was at a firm which specialized in Business litigation and Corporate Acquisitions – where he worked in the M&A Practice.
He spent over 15 years of his career at PennCorp Financial which was listed and traded on the NYSE at which he became Chief Counsel and Senior Vice President. PennCorp owned 5 insurance companies, a securities broker dealer and one of the 10 largest insurance agencies in the United States.
After PennCorp was sold, he left to join a 160 lawyer firm in Century City where he was one of the two senior corporate lawyers; and in 1990 he left to become one of the principals and General Counsel of Todd Shipyards Corporation which was listed and traded on the NYSE. He then also started his law firm.
Silverman also has equity interests in some start up companies – to which he provides guidance as they grow and are ultimately sold or go public.
Steve and his wife are very active in two charity organizations. They are Co-Chairmen of A Culinary Evening with California Winemasters – which raises in the one night in excess of $1 million each year; and also they focus on the total support of a Children’s Center in Gatanga, Kenya to which along with friends they raise the money to provide 100% of the support for the Gatanga Children’s Center.
Silverman holds a JD degree from the University of Southern California School of Law where he was a staff member of the Law Review; he also attended the USC School of Business and graduated as a Dean’s List Student.
He and his wife enjoy food, wine and travel.
